- Goldwork embroidery scissors
- A velvet board or soft surface to cut the metals
- Mellor (optional - you can also use one of the chenille needles included in the kit)
This project was taught as an in-person class at the Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA) National Seminar in Dallas in 2025 and has also been taught previously online.
In this class, you will explore core goldwork embroidery techniques while working through the design step by step.
This workshop is suitable for those new to goldwork, as well as for stitchers who would like to work through this project in a structured and supported way.
Throughout the class, you will learn everything needed to complete the design, including how to prepare a backing fabric for goldwork, how to recognise and work with different metal threads, purls, and goldwork threads, and how to blend colours using bright check purls. The techniques covered include couching, chipping, the two-needle leaf stitch (that I personally love), and other essential goldwork methods.
By the end of the class, you will not only be able to apply these techniques to other goldwork projects, but you will also gain confidence in identifying and selecting commonly used metal threads. The skills learned in this workshop are intended to support further exploration and encourage you to develop your own designs, showing that goldwork can be far more accessible than it first appears.
The kit includes a printed pattern based on a 19th-century embroidery design, selected for its suitability for goldwork and for working with coloured purls.
I look forward to stitching this project with you and guiding you through the process.
